The Blooming Self: A Guide to April’s Beauty and Balance
Introduction
We’ve cleared our homes and energized our bodies. Now, as April reaches its peak, we turn our attention inward. In the world of aromatherapy, April is governed by the "floral" family—the scents of new blossoms and green shoots.
This is the season of the Inner Garden. Just as the flowers outside are carefully unfolding, our skin and our spirits need a gentle touch to help them bloom after a long, dry winter.
A Quick Safety Note
It’s important to point out a few safety notes in mind and ensure that they are followed mindfully.
Some essential oils such as Rosemary and Eucalyptus are reported to have properties that can trigger those living with Epilepsy, so caution is very important and avoid or speak to your doctor if you are unsure.
Where possible alternative essential oils are suggested for use if you’re unable to use Rosemary, but do NOT risk using any ingredient if you are unsure.
Essential oils must never be used on your skin without being diluted in a carrier oil, and must never be ingested or taken internally. In the event that essential oils get onto your skin, wash off immediately with warm water and your usual soap and monitor for any affects. If in the eyes, rinse a few times with milk and seek medical advice immediately.
Always ensure your space is well-ventilated when diffusing, especially around pets or small children. If applying mist to fabrics, do a small patch test first to ensure the oils don't stain.

Balancing the Seasonal Shift
April weather is notoriously fickle—one day it’s a drying wind, the next it’s humid rain. This can leave our skin feeling confused and our moods feeling "scattered." To find our centre, we look to essential oils that act as adaptogens: oils that help the body and mind return to a state of equilibrium.
The Radiance Trio: April’s Beauty Essentials
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens): Often called the "poor man’s rose," Geranium is a powerhouse for skincare. It helps regulate sebum production, making it perfect for skin that doesn't know if it’s dry or oily this month.
Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini): Despite its rosy scent, this is a grass. It is exceptionally hydrating and helps the skin retain moisture as we spend more time in the sun and wind.
Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium): Distilled from the leaves of the bitter orange tree, this is the "green" version of Neroli. It is incredibly grounding and helps quiet the mind when the excitement of spring feels a bit overwhelming.
The April Highlight: The "Spring Glow" Facial Steam
A facial steam is the perfect bridge between winter’s heavy rituals and summer’s light care. It opens the pores, releases tension in the jaw, and allows you to breathe in the botanical benefits deeply.
The Ritual:
Cleanse your face thoroughly.
Fill a large bowl with 1 litre of just-boiled water.
Add 1 drop of Geranium and 1 drop of Lavender. (Optional: Add a handful of dried rose petals or chamomile flowers).
Drape a towel over your head and the bowl, creating a steam tent.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply for 5–8 minutes.
The Result:
Your skin will feel soft and plump, and your mind will feel as calm as a spring morning. Follow up with a light moisturizer or your favourite floral water (Hydrosol).
